The Government has published a review about the over-prescription of medications in primary care. It found that around 10% of prescription items dispensed through primary care in England are either inappropriate for that patients’ circumstances and wishes, or could be better served with alternative treatments.
“We welcome this review, which recommends the wider adoption of social prescribing as an alternative to the prescription of drugs. While medication plays a vital role in the treatment of many conditions, social prescribing has the power to transform health outcomes without the need for medication.
As a national organisation supporting the implementation of social prescribing, we hear every day about the amazing impact of connecting people to practical and emotional support in their communities, and so we welcome these findings.”
