Award for the Best Arts & Culture Social Prescribing Project - Social Prescribing Awards 2024
Raw Sounds, a therapeutic music and mental health programme in Brixton, South London, has become a beacon of hope for many. Since its inception in 2012, in partnership with the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, Raw Sounds has provided invaluable support through social prescribing, helping around 300 individuals aged 11 to 70 each year.
The programme's three key initiatives are Mindful Music, The Voice and Vibe Alliance. Mindful Music provides reflective, therapeutic daytime sessions focusing on experimental and improvised music, open to both musicians and non-musicians. The Voice enhances group singing, songwriting, vocal technique, and stagecraft, leading to performance opportunities. Vibe Alliance combines vocal and instrumental sessions, where participants collaborate in ensembles, writing songs and performing at local events and festivals.
Raw Sounds primarily serves individuals from Black African, Afro-Caribbean, and mixed heritage backgrounds, reflecting South London's diversity. Many face socio-economic challenges and mild to acute mental health issues. Notably, 65% of those admitted to Lambeth’s acute psychiatric wards are from African and Caribbean backgrounds, despite representing only 20% of the population.
As a culturally democratic organisation, Raw Material involves community members in governance and programme selection through the Programming Committee, promoting equity and confidence.
Recent data highlights Raw Sounds' impact:
-
64% of members felt sessions alleviated loneliness or isolation.
-

A mental health counsellor praised Raw Sounds, saying, “It has been wonderful to see my client grow in confidence and find joy through your courses. He reflected on how he is the happiest he has ever been. He has found new meaning in his life after a few weeks on your course and the vital performance at the end.”
One participant, initially quiet and withdrawn, now uses public transport for the first time in 10 years to attend sessions, showcasing significant growth in confidence.
Raw Sounds continues to inspire and support its community, demonstrating the profound impact of music on mental health and wellbeing.
