‘In the forces – you walk across the barracks and can immediately speak to a doctor. Civilian life is much more complicated’

Meet Ashlee, former member of the armed forces and social prescribing link worker, who is on a mission to help veterans get the support they need. Saturday – National Armed Forces Day – The National Academy for Social Prescribing is spotlighting the pioneering work of Hertfordshire based veteran and social prescribing link worker, Ashlee. Ashlee left the army feeling prepared for whatever life had to throw at her. She’d been trained to be able to deal with life or death situations, surely civilian life would be easy? But - leaving her exit interview armed only with a thin plastic folder of [...]

Social Prescribing Link Workers- we need you!

2022-02-11T14:47:30+00:00

Calling all link workers – we want to hear your story! As part of our ongoing work promoting social prescribing, we are gathering case studies to help us illustrate the positive impact your work has on patients and the healthcare system at large. They will be shared with health leaders, commissioners, primary care staff and other link workers, among others, to demonstrate the crucial role that social prescribing can play. The case studies need to demonstrate the four main themes outlined below: IMPACT: Can you use your experience to explain how the link worker role functions and how it fits into a multidisciplinary [...]

Getting veteran friendly accredited shows your veteran patients that you understand and care

2021-11-16T12:09:40+00:00

Ashlee Manning is a social prescribing GP link worker for Herts Help.  She is also an Armed Forces veteran. There are 2.2 million veterans like me in England.  Yet around half of GP practices don’t know how many veterans they have - simply because they aren’t aware of [...]

Connecting link workers to the community fabric

2021-08-09T13:44:02+01:00

Following their piece published in April, we're hearing again from Croydon Voluntary Action about how they are helping their Social Prescribing Link Workers connect with the community. Relationship and community are crucial. Dr Julian Abel says “They are fundamental to our health. If this was a tablet, it would be an absolute medical miracle.” (Pinker (2015), The Village Effect). In Croydon we’ve been hosting virtual ‘Meet Your Link Worker’ events across the borough, asking social prescribing link workers from each locality to co-host. We put the call out to local people and organisations to hear about their experiences [...]
